You are a virtue signaller. You just don’t realise it.
You are part of cancel culture. You just don’t realise it.
The person who waves the rainbow flag is virtue signalling. The person who waves the national flag is also virtue signalling. The cause is different, the behavior is the same.
The person who wishes to eradicate homophobia is engaged in cancel culture. The person who wishes to eradicate homosexuality is also engaged in cancel culture. The cause is different, the behaviour is the same.
For some reason, we have difficulty coming to terms with these simple ideas. Everyone pursues virtue signalling and cancel culture, but no one admits to it. Neither progressive nor conservative have a clear insight into their complicity in this conduct.
So it is useful to commence from the basics. Let us consider the reason for these behaviours, why they are important and why they are ubiquitous yet deeply unpopular.
We will probably never embrace virtue signalling and cancel culture. But understanding them would be a good start.
